Genesis 1:1&2 says, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.”
He is Moving…
If I am being completely honest, I must admit that this verse aptly describes moments when I feel a loss of purpose or effectiveness in my “work” or just life in general. It describes a space that was dark, without form, and void. I am thinking about seasons when I struggle to see any evidence or fruit of all I have been doing. When it feels like God is doing nothing or “nothing is happening.”
However, I am always reminded that amid this “nothingness,” the Spirit of God was hovering. The Hebrew word denotes the idea of sweeping or moving. Some versions read it like this, “The Spirit moved upon the face of the waters.”
The point here is that even when “things” in your life are not moving, God is! His Spirit is hovering over your life; He is in constant motion. Consider the beauty of His love sweeping and moving across the moments of your day. I know we don’t always FEEL it, and we certainly don’t always SEE it, but this is where faith comes in. We get to believe that God is MOVING on our behalf even when life is void and “without form” or evidence of our efforts.
So don’t give up because you can be sure that God is working amid your void. He is not done, He is NEVER done, if fact, He has only just begun!
